We wouldn’t feel Canadian if we didn’t hear some chatter about the risks that the big bad wolf was going to huff and puff and blow our house prices down. The latest warning came in a podcast interview with Peter Routledge, who heads up the country’s banking regulator, OSFI. Part of its job is to keep an eye on real estate trends given how much of the private sector debt is backed by it.

Almost two years into the pandemic, we continue to believe equities are the superior asset class in an overall low-return environment. From an operational standpoint, earnings across both the S&P 500 and the S&P/TSX have shown a remarkable resilience in weathering previously unimaginable headwinds over the last two years. Stretched equity valuations are supported by unusually low interest rates.

Canada’s bond index had its best performance in six years bolstered by the most extraordinary central bank measures in history to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. This stimulus and other supports not only pushed down yields, but also caused spreads to recover rapidly from their widest levels at the onset of the pandemic. But credit performance was concentrated in the short- and mid- areas of the curve, leaving the long end to meaningfully underperform.
